To watch HDR content you need a TV that supports HDR, ideally with a panel that can faithfully display the full range that HDR requires. Not all 4K content is HDR, but when it is, and your TV can handle it, it looks much better because of that wider reach of light and color. Think of it this way: 4K determines the number of pixels in your video, while HDR determines how much light and color each pixel can display. HDR content stores wider and more granular values of brightness, darkness, and color levels than standard dynamic range content, which lets TVs that support HDR show pictures that are brighter, darker, and more colorful. HDR is a type of content, most often in 4K, that expands the range of color and light that can be shown. They aren't, and our guide to HDR explains the differences in more detail. High dynamic range (HDR) is a confusing term, and it's easy to mix it up with 4K or assume that they're the same thing. If you spend the extra money on an 8K TV, you'll be relying entirely on the TV's upconversion process of 4K or lower resolution media, and that can't be as good as native 8K content. There are no standardized 8K streaming formats or physical media, though. We go into detail about what 8K means and when you can expect it in our 8K explainer, but for now all you need to know is that some TVs are hitting 8K resolution (7,680 by 4,320, four times the resolution of 4K), but there is no consumer content available in native 8K and there won't be any for a while. The long answer is that 8K is already here for some high-end TVs, but it isn't going to be a major factor for some time. This is a major factor for large TVs as well, especially since 65-inch models are as affordable as 55-inch TVs were just a few years ago, and even 75-inch TVs can be found for reasonable prices (with some models pushing past 80 inches, but at that point the the prices jump much higher). 4K is another big jump in terms of clarity and detail, especially as people are becoming more and more used to the incredibly tiny pixels displayed by the high-resolution screens on their phones. While regular viewers struggled to see the difference between 1080p and 720p on smaller televisions, it's much more obvious on 40-inch and larger TVs. You can also stream 4K video over the internet, which similarly requires a fast connection Netflix recommends a steady 25Mbps downstream speed to watch 4K content over its service. This was initially a concern as HDMI 2.0 was becoming more commonplace, but right now you can count on nearly any home entertainment device you buy to support HDMI 2.0, and based on our tests you'd have to really go junk shopping to find an HDMI cable that can't transmit a 4K60 HDR picture. The HDMI 2.0 standard was developed to support 4K, and allows 2160p video to be displayed at 60 frames per second. It isn't as good as native 4K content because you can't simply synthesize additional detail out of nothing, but it's a good backup.īecause the resolution is much higher, it requires more bandwidth to transmit. Even if you don't, companies like LG, Samsung, and Sony have developed impressive upconverting technologies that scale 1080p and lower resolution content to 4K with various image enhancements. That makes for a significant jump in clarity, assuming you have native 4K source material to watch in that resolution. In the space that a 1080p TV holds a pixel, a 4K TV of the same size can hold four. This means 4K is obviously much sharper than 1080p. However you define it, it's four times the number of pixels on a 1080p display, and over 23 times the resolution of standard definition television. Digital cinema 4K (the resolution in 4K movie theaters) is slightly higher at 4,096 by 2,160. For televisions, that resolution has standardized to 3,840 by 2,160. What Is 4K?Ī 4K display is one with at least 8 million active pixels. If you haven't made the jump to 4K yet, this is a good time to do it. You can find 4K TVs in all sizes and prices, including 65-inch models for well under $1,000. 4K has gone through its early steps and various growing pains for early adopters, and is now solidly mainstream as the standard type of TV you can buy. HDTVs with 1,920-by-1,080 resolutions have been effectively placed with bigger, brighter 4K TVs with four times as many pixels. Method The survey was sent to American Speech-Language-Hearing Association (ASHA)-certified SLPs, identified by the ASHA ProFind database, across six U.S. At present, there is a lack of data in peer-reviewed publications within the discipline of communication disorders on SJ and even less regarding the perceptions of SLPs on SJ. As our professional organizations call us to advocate and communicate with regulatory agencies and legislative bodies to promote quality care for all individuals, this topic has become particularly important at this time. Severity of hearing loss is graded as mild (26-40 dB), moderate (41-55 dB), moderately severe (56-70 dB), severe (71-90 dB) and profound (90 dB).Purpose The purpose of this survey research is to provide preliminary data regarding speech-language pathologists' (SLPs') perceptions of the role that social justice (SJ) plays in their work. Method The survey was sent to American Speech-Language-Hearing Association (ASHA)-certified SLPs, identified by the ASHA ProFind database, across six U.S. Hearing is considered normal if an individual's thresholds are within 15 dB of normal thresholds. The threshold or 0 dB mark for each frequency refers to the level at which typical young adults perceive a tone burst 50% of the time. The severity of hearing loss is measured in decibles (dB). Hearing loss may be present at birth (congenital) or become evident later in life (acquired) and may or may not preclude the normal development of language. ASHA Certification refers to the Certificate of Clinical Competence (CCC), a nationally recognized professional credential that represents a level of excellence in the field of Audiology (CCC-A) or Speech-Language Pathology (CCC-SLP). Included are conductive hearing loss that results from abnormalities of the external ear and/or the ossicles of the middle ear sensorineural hearing loss that results from malfunction of inner ear structures (i.e., cochlea) and central auditory dysfunction that results from damage or dysfunction at the level of the eighth cranial nerve, auditory brain stem, or cerebral cortex. A disruption in the normal hearing process that may occur in the outer, middle, or inner ear, which prevents sound waves from being converted to electrical signals and nerve impulses from being transmitted to the brain to be interpreted. The site commonly known as Athlunkard (Ath-an-longphuirt) in County Clare is not connected to any specific event and is actually in Fairyhill townland (two townlands to the north), half a mile from Athlunkard bridge. Kelly draws attention to the similarities of these arrangements to those described at a Viking fortification on the River Dyle in Belgium, which was destroyed in AD 891. The dún itself is a ringfort on a small hill surrounded by a large D-shaped ditched enclosure. The fleet, which was destroyed, had recently arrived from Lochlainn and a ‘dreadful slaughter’ was made of them. the destruction of Longphort-Rothlaibh by Cinnedidh, son of Gaithin, Lord of Laighis, on the fifth of the ides of September and the killing of Conall Ultach and Luirgnen, with many others along with them’. Kelly, suggested that the name Dunrally is an Anglicisation of Dún-Rothlaibh (Rodolph’s fort), which they connect to Longphort-Rothlaibh of AD 862. The three Irish sites all feature D-shaped enclosures on the edge of rivers but other than that have little in common. A burial mound next to the enclosure contained a Viking war-grave and the enclosure itself incorporates an Anglo-Saxon church. The remains of a winter camp of AD 873–4 at Repton, on the Trent near Derby and one of the few such sites to be thoroughly excavated, do feature a D-shaped enclosure. Scandinavian fortifications, such as at Hedeby (Germany) and Århus (Denmark), feature a D-shaped enclosure, but these are much more mature than the early longphuirt. Much of the discussion of the likely significance of Woodstown has drawn on other supposed examples of longphuirt at Dunrally (Co. Reconstruction of a Viking winter camp at Repton, 873–4. If it can be precisely dated, Woodstown may give us a good look at the original Viking presence in Waterford harbour and hence a good analogy for the origins of Dublin. Woodstown has produced ships’ nails, hack-silver, the remains of Viking weaponry and a high-status pagan burial, although early claims that this is the grave of the Viking leader Rodolph seem premature. The early stages of Scandinavian settlement in Ireland and Britain remain difficult to locate in the archaeological record, which is why the recent discoveries at Woodstown, on the upper tidal reaches of the River Suir, are so important. But what exactly was a longphort? Michael Gibbons investigates. Settlements such as this are described as longphuirt or longphorts in the present literature. There are no cheap jump scares in Tormentum it’s more of an ongoing sense that something is very, very wrong. This is a minor issue though: overall, the sound design worked well to compliment the disturbing visuals. The “storing” effect for putting items in your inventory, or the clomping down the stairs, or the scribbling-in-a-notebook sound all seem to be a bit comical and out of place. Some of the sound effects, however, were a little hokey and detracted from how immersive the game was. The barely audible chanting in the dungeon levels, for example, isn’t particularly scary, but when paired with the visual effects of various forms of torture and the sadism of some of the characters, the result was an extremely creepy sensory experience. The aesthetic style of the game is also enhanced by its soundtrack, which worked to heighten the sense of unease. While this doesn’t affect the gaming experience much, it can be difficult to immerse yourself in a game when you’re looking for directional arrows, in the cases where they’re almost obscured by the art. However, players can use the mouse to pan left and right in the environment, and this is also necessary to see the directional arrows to move the character to the next screen. The artistic style also matches the overall tone of the game perfectly: it’s surreal, trippy, and just a little bit terrifying.Īs a result of the detailed art, the environment is 2D, and the protagonist doesn’t actually move around the screen. Each image looks so finely handcrafted that you could print it out and hang it on your wall, if you’re into hanging that sort of thing on your walls. Giger’s work, the 75 hand-painted stages in the game echo the dark, macabre style of the Swiss surrealist. The most noticeable thing when playing Tormentum is that it’s truly a visual feast. Tormentum's Art Belongs in a Very Spooky Gallery This sounds easy enough, although there are choices that the player makes along the way, such as lending help to one character over another, which are designed to influence the game’s outcome. From there, he has to escape from a hellish dungeon, travel across a desert and find out why he only has a memory of a particular statue. The protagonist starts the game as a hooded, nameless amnesiac locked in a metal cage under a flying machine, his companion being a giant talking rat. How well the game does this is debatable, but it is still worth playing for the amazing sensory experience. The title released March 4th, 2015, and Polish indie studio OhNoo promises a deep philosophical story of redemption, where the player’s moral choices affect the outcome. I do wonder if that enigmatic "2" was indeed a scrapped Rising 2. The pieces and parts were all there, as was the critical and commercial success. I've said it a thousand times now, but Revengeance is still the perfect archetype for an obvious sequel that never happened. The game builds towards an unbelievably fulfilling climax and Armstrong is absolutely iconic for all the right reasons. The boss fights are not just larger than life characters and theatrical setpieces, they're also remarkably fun and challenging fights in of themselves. The levels are delicate paced between stretches of stealth/combat balance and ridiculous set pieces, wrapped in dumb Metal Gear monologues. The aggressive combat system is gloriously satisfying. It's an action stealth game, that has all the weird, goofy, experimental sandbox-like tools and gimmciks that Metal Gear is so well known for, just within the framework of Platinum's design model.Īnd I mean, everything else just rules. It's the perfect balance of self serious and absurd, while indulging in said self seriousness and absurdity to accentuate the prose.Īnd even though it's not quite on the mark of Kojima's MGS (how could it be?), there's just enough in there to be Metal Gear with another studio's distinct take on the franchise. It's a sum total of parts moving in absolutely perfect unison and tonal coherency. But what we got, and how we got it, is just magic. It's rough, it's short, and a bunch of stuff was prototyped Platinum but ultimately cut (like wall running) that I would have assumed would be fleshed out in a sequel. It’s one of the two most useful and most used apps on my mac, the other one being omnifocus. iThoughts is an amazing productivity tool. Once you figure it out and how it flows, it’s a great and fast tool for generating thoughts and grouping them quickly and efficiently. It’s easy on the back side of that brainstorming to go back and add more organization by changing the colors of specific groups, changing the way the outline looks, etc. It’s all just so darn easy once you get the groove of it. I’ve probably been using it for five or six years and I have now bought this program for every device I own: mac, windows, iPad, iPhone. This developer is very responsive with quick answers back by email to questions. There are a couple of things that I think aren’t in iThoughts yet and would be important additions. The first of those is the ability to password protect documents. Much of the information that I put into iThoughts is highly confidential from a business perspective and, since docs cannot be protected, I find myself trying to figure out how I can hide them on thumb drives or whatever. It would also be good if there were a better flow for being able to access documents between computers and portable devices. It is possible now, but it seems tedious and doesn’t flow well. Those pieces of input aside, I wouldn’t be deterred. During the import iThoughts will choose one of the Freemind topic colors to use and ignore the others.IThoughts is the real deal and deserved a great review. For example Freemind has 3 colors per topic (line, fill, text) whereas iThoughts only supports a single topic color. NB2: Not all attributes will be carried over from the source map during the import. NB: The imported map is DUPLICATED and CONVERTED to ITMZ format - so any changes will not be written back to the original. You can then choose the folder and whether it should be stored on device or in iCloud or Dropbox etc. When a map is ‘imported’ to iThoughts then it will be converted to the native iThoughts file format (.itmz) and you will be asked where you’d like it saved. The following methods will work:Įmail the map to yourself then tap on the attachment (in Mail on your iOS device) and choose 'Copy To ' from the Share Sheet.Ĭopy the map into the cloud (iCloud Drive, Dropbox, OneDrive, GDrive etc.) then close any open map and choose Import from the menu under the Gear toolbar button. The tricky part (on iOS) is getting the map onto your iOS device in the first place. On Windows you may need to change the filter in the File Open dialog. On Windows/Mac it is a simple matter of File -> Open and choose the file to import. IThoughts can import many of the most popular desktop mind map file formats - see here for a list. |
